According to legend, the 4711 brand was born from a gift: on October 8, 1792, the young merchant Wilhelm Muelhens received a wedding gift from a Carthusian monk: a secret recipe for a miraculous water for both internal and external use. A merchant and entrepreneur, Muelhens opened a factory in Cologne immediately after his wedding and initially marketed the miraculous water as a health drink and vitalizing elixir. In 1774, with the invasion of French troops, to make lodgings easier to find, the commanding officer of the troops numbered the houses. Muelhens's house was given the street number 4711 , the name by which the Eau de Cologne was later named. After Napoleon's decree making the recipes of all medicines intended for internal use public, Muelhens, who did not want to reveal the secret recipe, began marketing the drink as a fragrance. The bottle was given a new design and was called the “Molanus bottle” after the inventor Peter Heinrich Molanus.

In 1975, Ferdinand Muelhens registered 4711 as a trademark. Today, 4711 is a global perfumery brand. In 2009, 4711 created a range of fragrances for men and women based on the sensual effects of natural ingredients. In 2014, the new fragrance Wunderwasser was born, in both women's and men's versions.
