Olaplex: the complete guide to the numbers and how to use them

How Olaplex works

Olaplex is not a protein product, nor a keratin-based one. There is only one patented active ingredient, bis-aminopropyl diglycol dicitrate, present throughout the whole line. It works by rebuilding the disulfide bonds in keratin that break during bleaching, colouring, perming and heat styling.

This is a substantial difference compared to traditional restructuring treatments: those deposit proteins on the surface of the hair and wear off with washing, while Olaplex works on the internal structure of the fibre. That's why the results are cumulative and require consistent use.

Olaplex does not treat dandruff, is not a scalp product (with the exception of the Pro Scalp Rebalancing Concentrate) and does not change hair colour, except for the toning versions 4P and 5P.

The Olaplex numbers: what each one does

Salon products

N.1 Bond Multiplier — mixed directly into colour or bleach. For professional use only, available as part of the Salon Intro Kit.

N.2 Bond Perfector — applied in salon after rinsing the technical service, left on for 10-20 minutes. Also included in the Salon Intro Kit.

Home products

N.0 Intensive Bond Building Treatment (155 ml) — intensive pre-treatment. Applied to dry hair, left on for 10 minutes and not rinsed out: N.3 is applied directly on top. Reserved for very damaged or bleached hair.

N.3 Hair Perfector (100 ml) — the best-known treatment in the line. Used before shampooing, on damp, towel-dried hair, left on for at least 10 minutes, then rinsed out before shampoo and conditioner. Once or twice a week. It is not a mask and does not replace conditioner.

N.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo — hydrating maintenance shampoo, suitable for all hair types. Available in 250 ml and 1000 ml.

N.4C Clarifying Shampoo — purifying shampoo, removes product build-up, minerals and silicones. To be used once every two weeks in place of N.4, not with every wash.

N.4P Blonde Toning Shampoo — version with purple pigments to counteract brassiness for blonde, grey and bleached hair.

N.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo — dry shampoo, to extend the time between washes.

N.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner — the line's conditioner, used after N.4. Applied to the lengths, left on for 3 minutes and rinsed out. Available in 250 ml and 1000 ml.

N.5P Blonde Enhancer Toning Conditioner — purple toning conditioner, paired with N.4P.

N.6 Bond Smoother (100 ml) — leave-in cream. Applied to damp hair, not rinsed out, it controls frizz and makes styling easier. A couple of walnut-sized amounts are enough.

N.7 Bonding Oil (30 ml) — leave-in oil with declared heat protection up to 230 °C. Applied to damp or dry hair, not rinsed out. A few drops on the lengths.

N.8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask (100 ml) — rinse-out mask, left on for 10 minutes. Replaces N.5 on wash days when extra nourishment is needed.

N.9 Bond Protector Nourishing Hair Serum (90 ml) — leave-in serum with heat protection and antioxidant properties. Applied to damp hair before drying and not rinsed out.

Specific treatments

Broad Spectrum Chelating Treatment (370 ml) — removes copper, iron and calcium deposited by hard water, responsible for dullness and colour shifts. Useful before bleaching.

Pro Scalp Rebalancing Concentrate (10 vials of 4 ml) — the only product in the line designed for the scalp.

Weightless Mask (200 ml) — for fine hair, nourishes without weighing it down.

Bond Shaper Curl Defining Gel (200 ml) and Volumizing Blowdry Mist (150 ml) — styling.

What order to use Olaplex at home

The correct at-home routine, without the salon products:

1. N.0 on dry hair, 10 minutes, do not rinse (only if hair is very damaged)
2. N.3 on top, on damp hair, at least 10 minutes, then rinse
3. N.4 shampoo
4. N.5 conditioner, or N.8 if extra nourishment is needed
5. N.9 or N.6 on damp hair, no rinsing
6. N.7 at the end of styling on dry hair, if shine and control are needed

N.0 and N.3 once or twice a week. N.4 and N.5 with every wash. Leave-ins with every styling session.
