The company was founded in 1966 by Renzo Zengiaro and Michele Taddei, who chose the name bottega precisely to underline the use of artisanal techniques during the production processes. Initially, production was focused on leather goods, but in the 1960s the creation of fragrances was introduced. In 2001, Bottega Veneta became part of the Gucci group.
